Multi-Jump with Short Ropes
A varied jump rope session with short ropes, first individually and then in pairs, finishing with a student-created combination. Students work on coordination, rhythm and leg strength.
How to play
- Each student takes a rope and finds enough space to turn it without hitting anyone (about 10 feet apart). Size the rope: standing on the middle, the handles reach the armpits (2 min).
- Review basic jumps: 30 seconds two-foot jumps and 30 seconds alternating feet, with 30 seconds of rest between sets (3 min).
- Traveling jumps: jump forward from one line to another about 30 feet away and walk back (3 min).
- Partner jumping: two students side by side share one rope, each holding one handle, and jump together in time (3 min).
- Final challenge: each pair creates a combination of three jump types and teaches it to another pair (3 min).
- Finish with 1 minute of easy jumping and put the ropes away coiled.
Rules
- Keep safe spacing between ropes: if your rope touches someone, move apart.
- Land on the balls of your feet with knees slightly bent, not on your heels.
- Ropes are never used to pull or tie anyone.
- During breaks, fold the rope on the floor so no one trips.
Variations
Easier
Lay the rope straight on the floor and jump over it side to side or forward and back.
Standard
Basic individual jumps, traveling jumps and partner jumps.
Harder
Double unders, criss-crosses or hopping on one foot and alternating.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: turn the rope seated to set the rhythm for others or wiggle it side to side like a snake for classmates to jump.
- Coordination difficulties: first turn the rope without jumping, then jump without turning, until the two are combined.
- Asthma or low fitness: shorter sets and frequent breaks, with freedom to stop when needed.
Learning goals
- Improve arm-leg coordination and jumping rhythm.
- Develop leg strength and endurance.
- Create and share jump combinations with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Individual jump ropes: 25
Teacher tip
Take time to size the ropes: a rope that's too long is the most common cause of misses. Music with a strong beat helps students find the rhythm.

Accuracy Circuit with Cloth Targets
Accuracy stations with cloth targets on the floor and on the wall, where students toss bean bags and score points by ring. They work on throwing accuracy and matching force to distance.
Adapted Beach Handball
An adapted beach handball game with a soft ball: no dribbling, three steps with the ball, and double points for spectacular goals such as jump or spin shots. It develops throwing, passing and team play in a fun, safe way.
Adapted Volleyball
A simplified volleyball game with a soft foam ball where students may catch and toss the ball before learning to hit it, keeping rallies going over the net. It develops striking, teamwork, and court positioning without the fear of a hard ball.
Aerobics Stations
Students rotate through five aerobics stations to upbeat music, doing step-ups, jumping jacks, high knees, skipping and dance moves. The activity builds cardiovascular endurance and coordination at each student's own intensity.
Agility Ladder Circuit
Small groups rotate through agility ladders laid on the blacktop, practicing footwork patterns from one foot per square to lateral and in-out steps. It develops quick feet, rhythm, coordination and agility.
Animal Kingdom Circuit
Each station represents an animal, and students move like it: frog jumps, bear walks, crab walks and kangaroo hops. The circuit works the whole body, builds strength and coordination, and encourages creativity.
