Mini-Volley Attack to the Hoop
In groups of three, one student tosses, another sets and the third hits the ball over the net to land in hoops on the other side. It's an intro to the attack in mini-volleyball, adapted for elementary school, that works on the pass-set-hit sequence and accuracy.
How to play
- Use 3 mini-volleyball nets at about 6.5 ft and place 4 hoops on each far side (two near the back corners and two on the sidelines). Make groups of three; two or three groups per net (3 min).
- Roles: tosser (from the back, two-hand toss to the setter), setter (by the net, sets high) and hitter (open-hand hit over the net).
- Hit with no jump, an open hand and a straight arm, aiming for a hoop. Each group makes 5 attacks, then rotates roles (about 3 minutes per rotation).
- Scoring: 1 point for getting it over the net in bounds and 3 if it lands in a hoop. After 3 rotations, each group totals its score (10 min).
- 3-minute final challenge: another group defends and earns a point for passing the attack without letting it drop. Quick wrap-up (1 min).
Rules
- The hitter uses an open hand; no pushing or throwing.
- Wait until the other side is clear before attacking.
- Safety: nobody hangs on the net or jumps right next to it, and the retriever waits on the sideline.
Variations
Easier
After the set, the hitter throws the ball over the net with two hands.
Standard
Open-hand attack after a toss and a set.
Harder
The first pass is a forearm pass, and the hitter may take a small jump.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student sets while seated or attacks with the net lowered.
- Shyness: stable groups and no audience: all groups attack at the same time.
- Skill level: a light foam ball and bigger hoops.
Learning goals
- Link pass, set and attack as a team.
- Hit the ball over the net with an open hand and direction.
- Understand each role in the play.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyball: 8
- net: 3
- hoops: 12
Teacher tip
The key is a good, high set close to the net; if it breaks down, replace the toss with the hitter's own self-toss. Use soft balls so hands don't sting.
