Mini Team Handball with a Joker
Three-on-three mini team handball games with a joker who always plays for the team in possession, creating a 4v3 overload. Students practice passing on the move, shooting on goal, and finding the open teammate.
How to play
- Set up two 65 x 40 ft courts with a small goal at each end and a 13-ft goal area marked with cones; form teams of 3 plus one joker in a different pinnie per court (3 min).
- No permanent goalie: the last defender may block from the goal area, but attackers never step in it.
- The joker always plays offense with the team that has the ball and switches teams instantly on a turnover.
- Players dribble, take three steps, and pass; a goal is worth 1 point, or 2 if the joker made the assist.
- Play 4-minute games; after each one, a new student becomes the joker until everyone has had a turn (16 min).
- Final question: what did you do to get the ball to the open teammate? (3 min).
Rules
- Three steps max and only one continuous dribble.
- Steal only by intercepting or off the dribble, never out of hands.
- Nobody steps into the goal area except the player acting as goalie.
- Safety: shoot one-handed, below the goalie's chest.
Variations
Easier
Play with two jokers, and no steals off the dribble.
Standard
Three-on-three plus an offensive joker with a 13-ft goal area.
Harder
The joker may pass but not shoot, and three players must touch the ball before a goal.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be a permanent joker in a sideline zone where the ball can't be stolen.
- Visual impairment: use a high-contrast ball and mark goals with large cones.
- Fitness or skill level: shoot with a foam ball from closer in.
Learning goals
- Pass and catch on the move with a numbers advantage.
- Shoot on goal one-handed after a catch.
- Spot the open teammate and use the overload.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handball: 3
- small goals: 4
- pinnies: 16
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
Pick students with good court vision as the first jokers so they model the role. If a stand-in goalie is nervous, use a soft ball.
