Magic Carpet Flip
A group of 5 stands on a small tarp, their magic carpet, and must flip it completely over without anyone touching the floor. Students practice balance, group problem-solving, and safely helping each other physically.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5. Each group gets a tarp about 5 × 3 feet laid flat on the floor, at least 10 feet from the others.
- The whole group steps onto the tarp. The teacher explains that the carpet is upside down and must be flipped without any foot touching the floor.
- First free try for 4 minutes. Each time someone steps off, the group counts a "splash" but keeps going.
- 2-minute huddle: each group thinks about how to free up a corner, such as squeezing onto one half of the tarp.
- Second try for 5 minutes, aiming for fewer splashes than the first time.
- Groups that succeed fold the tarp in half and repeat with less space (4 min).
Rules
- You may hold teammates by the shoulders or waist, but never push.
- No piggyback rides or carrying anyone.
- If you lose your balance, step off rather than falling on someone.
- Count each splash out loud and keep playing.
Variations
Easier
Groups of 4 on a bigger tarp.
Standard
Groups of 5 on a 5 × 3 foot tarp.
Harder
The group must flip the tarp without talking.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair stays beside the tarp and coaches the group on freeing the corner.
- Autism: give a heads-up that there will be close contact, and let the student choose a spot on the edge.
- Fitness level: students with weaker balance stand in the middle, supported by two teammates.
Learning goals
- Keep your balance in a small space with others.
- Come up with several solutions to a problem as a group.
- Give and accept physical help safely.

Teacher tip
Use thin fabric tarps or old bed sheets; plastic slides on a gym floor. Mix up groups so the same friends aren't always together.
