Little Monkeys Hang for a Moment
Holding a low bar with an adult right beside them, kids hang for a few seconds tucking their legs up like little monkeys, feet very close to the floor. It builds grip strength, hanging skills and confidence.
How to play
- Review monkey hands: thumb hugging the bar (1 min).
- The teacher sets the bar at the children's shoulder height with a mat underneath (2 min).
- One at a time, with an adult beside them: grab the bar, tuck the knees and count "one monkey, two monkeys…" as long as they like (5 min).
- Second round: hang and swing the legs a little before putting the feet down (3 min).
- We celebrate with an "ooh, ooh!" and shake out our hands (1 min).
Rules
- I only hang when the teacher is next to me.
- If I get tired, I put my feet down.
- While I wait, I cheer for the monkey who's hanging.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just tuck the knees for one second with the adult holding the waist.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, hang for a count of three.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, count to five and swing gently.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: grips the bar from the chair and pulls with the arms.
- Autism: preview with a photo of a hanging monkey and let them watch first.
- Fear or less strength: hangs with feet still touching, just bending the arms.
Learning goals
- Hold the body hanging for a few seconds.
- Strengthen the grip with the thumb wrapped around the bar.
- Overcome fear with the adult's support.
Equipment for a class of 25
- barra baja: 1
- colchonetas: 2
Teacher tip
Bar at shoulder height: tuck the legs and you're hanging, drop them and you're standing, so there's never a fall. The adult always within arm's reach.
