How to play
- Sitting down, the teacher hands out cards numbered 1 to 5 (several of each), and each child says theirs out loud (2 min).
- We dance holding the card against our tummy so it shows; when the music stops, kids with the same number gather (3 min).
- Now we make the train: groups of five with different numbers line up in order from 1 to 5 (3 min).
- The train walks and at each stop the cars call out their numbers in order, like counting (2 min).
- We trade cards with a friend and build the train again with our new number (2 min).
- To finish, the teacher says "Countdown!" and the train lines up backward, from 5 to 1 (2 min).
Rules
- Keep your card where everyone can see it.
- If I don't know where my number goes, I ask a friend.
- In the train, every car in its place, no pushing.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, numbers 1 to 3 with dots drawn on, and we only gather with matching numbers.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, trains from 1 to 5.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, trains from 1 to 10 with two groups, and a countdown from 10.
Adaptations
- Child using a wheelchair: has a fixed spot in the train (for example, number 1), and the others line up from there.
- Blind or low-vision child: cards with raised numbers or raised stickers to count the dots.
- Autistic child: can keep the same number for the whole activity without trading.
Learning goals
- Put numbers 1 to 5 (or to 10) in order.
- Recognize their own number and their friends'.
- Work together to line up as a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tarjetas de números: 25
- música
Teacher tip
Hand out numbers so the trains come out complete; any extra kids become engineers without numbers. Hang the cards on yarn around their necks so they don't get lost.
