Laundry Hanging Out to Dry
Kids are T-shirts hung on a clothesline (a low bar): they hang for a moment and, when the teacher says "It's dry!", they drop gently onto their feet, bending their knees. It practices brief hanging and safe landing.
How to play
- The teacher "hangs the laundry": a big clothespin on each child's sleeve, and now they're a T-shirt (2 min).
- We practice landing without the bar: on tiptoes, drop the heels and bend the knees like a spring (2 min).
- Taking turns with an adult beside them, we hang from the bar at shoulder height with knees tucked (3 min).
- "It's dry!": let go and land on the mat with bent knees; the teacher takes off the clothespin (3 min).
- We fold the laundry: sit down and curl into a little ball (2 min).
Rules
- I only let go when the teacher says "Dry!".
- I land on my feet with bent knees.
- One on the clothesline at a time.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just bend the knees when letting go, feet almost on the floor and the adult holding them.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, hang and let go on the signal.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, land and freeze like a statue without taking a step.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practices grabbing and releasing the bar from the chair.
- Hearing impairment: the "dry" signal is a tap on the shoulder.
- Visual impairment: the adult says "Let go in three, two, one" and guides with a hand.
Learning goals
- Hang briefly from a bar.
- Land with bent knees.
- Control the body when letting go.
Equipment for a class of 25
- barra baja: 1
- colchonetas: 2
- pinzas de ropa grandes: 25
Teacher tip
Feet should be no more than a hand's width off the floor. If someone lets go early, no problem: landing well is exactly what we're practicing.
