Laundry Day Sock Match Relay

In the middle of the playground sits a "washing machine" full of mismatched old socks; teams run for them one at a time to make pairs, hang them on a line, and finally throw them balled up into a basket. It builds speed, visual attention, and teamwork.

How to play

  1. Setup: a large hoop in the center holds about 50 mixed old socks (25 pairs). Four teams of 6 stand in the corners, 12 yards from the center, each with a bucket as its laundry basket.
  2. Round 1, match up (4 min): one at a time, run to the washing machine, grab one sock, and run back. When the team has a matching pair, roll it into a ball and drop it in the basket.
  3. If a sock's match is no longer in the machine, you may return it on your next trip and take another.
  4. Round 2, clothesline (4 min): dump the socks back in the machine; now each pair is clipped with clothespins onto a rope stretched between two cones next to the team.
  5. Round 3, laundry hoops (5 min): each team balls up its pairs and throws them from 10 feet into another team's basket; every sock ball that goes in is a point for the thrower.
  6. Wrap-up (2 min): count pairs and gather all socks back into the machine.

Rules

Variations

Easier

Use socks that look very different and put the machine 8 yards away.

Standard

Match, hang, and throw with the machine 12 yards away.

Harder

Each trip uses a different movement (hopping, sliding, or backward), and some socks look nearly alike.

Adaptations

Learning goals

Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip

Ask families for clean old socks; any left unmatched make great beanbags filled with rice. Toss in two or three "trick" socks with no match so students think before they run.
