Lap Sit Circle
The whole class forms a tight circle, all facing the same way, and on a signal each student carefully sits on the knees of the classmate behind, so the group holds itself up. Students practice trust, coordination, and shared responsibility.
How to play
- First, in groups of 6, make a small circle standing shoulder to shoulder. Everyone turns right and steps toward the center until they're very close (2 min).
- Each student puts their hands on the waist of the person in front. On three, everyone slowly sits on the thighs of the person behind, holds 3 seconds, and stands up (4 min, several tries).
- Groups join in pairs (circles of 12) and repeat the challenge, holding 5 seconds.
- Final class challenge: one circle with everyone. If it works, try raising arms while sitting or taking two tiny steps together (4 min).
- 2-minute wrap-up: discuss what it took to keep the circle from breaking.
Rules
- Keep the circle very tight: each student's knees right behind the knees in front.
- Always sit and stand on the count of three, all together.
- If anyone says "stop," everyone stands up right away.
- No one has to sit; students may be observers.
Variations
Easier
Play in lines of 3 against a wall: the front student sits on the middle one, who sits on the last one.
Standard
Circles of 6, then 12, holding 5 seconds.
Harder
The whole class circle takes two coordinated steps while seated.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair is the director, calling the count and checking that the circle is tight.
- Autism or touch anxiety: the student can watch first and then join a small circle with trusted classmates.
- Size differences: place students of similar height next to each other so support stays level.
Learning goals
- Trust the support of classmates.
- Coordinate a movement at the same time as the whole group.
- Take responsibility for supporting someone else.
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is a circle that's too loose, so fix it before anyone sits. Start with small groups; if the class isn't calm, don't move on to the big circle.
