Labors of Hercules Strength Circuit

A six-station bodyweight strength circuit in which each station is inspired by one of the labors of the mythical hero Hercules. The story gives meaning to every exercise while building leg, arm and core strength with careful technique.

How to play

  1. Set up 6 stations, each with a task card: the Nemean Lion (bear crawl between cones), the Hydra (plank lifting one arm at a time to "cut off a head"), the Boar (squats) and the Stables (crab walk carrying a bean bag on the stomach to a hoop).
  2. Add the Cretan Bull (partner chest passes with a 1 kg / 2 lb medicine ball) and Atlas's Sky (wall sit with arms overhead "holding up the sky").
  3. Tell the story in 3 minutes: a king gave Hercules impossible labors, and today the class is going to complete them. Make 6 groups of 4–5 students.
  4. At each station, the teacher reads the labor in 30 seconds and the group works for 2 minutes at its own pace, resting as needed.
  5. Rotate in 30 seconds; each completed labor is checked off on the group's card (18 min).
  6. At the end, each group shares which muscles each labor worked the most and which one they would like to repeat (4 min).

Rules

Variations

Easier

Each station lasts 90 seconds and a soft ball replaces the medicine ball.

Standard

Six stations of 2 minutes of work with the narrated story.

Harder

Add three more labors as extra stations and shorten the rotation time.

Adaptations

Learning goals

Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip

Alternate leg and arm stations so muscles get a rest. A paper laurel crown for any group that completes all six labors with good form is a great motivator.
