Keep the Beach Ball off the Sand
The whole class, split into three circles, keeps a beach ball in the air with their hands so it never touches the floor, which is hot sand. They practice upward hits and group cooperation.

How to play
- In a circle, hand the beach ball around without throwing so everyone touches it (2 min).
- The teacher pops it up and we all hit it upward (3 min).
- Count the hits together before it touches the sand (3 min).
- With music, move around the space without letting it drop (2 min).
- The ball goes to sleep: lower it together very slowly to the floor (2 min).
Rules
- I hit upward with an open hand.
- I don't hit twice in a row; I leave it for someone else.
- If it falls, we shout "Hot!" and happily start again.
- I step back if the friend next to me is going for it.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a small circle with the teacher inside, and catching and re-tossing is fine.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, count the hits out loud.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, say the name of the friend they're sending it to before hitting.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the circle moves closer and the ball is sent at wheelchair height.
- Visual impairment: a beach ball with rice inside, and classmates call their names.
- Autism: may start outside the circle as the counter and join whenever ready.
Learning goals
- Hit a light object upward with the hand.
- Cooperate with the whole group.
- Count hits together.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Beach balls catch the wind: outdoors, pick a calm day or a sheltered corner. Celebrate each new group record, never an individual one.
