Jungle Journey Movement Story
The teacher narrates an expedition through the jungle while students act out every scene with their bodies: crossing rivers, climbing vines and hiding from animals. Students practice imitation, creative movement and basic locomotor skills inside a story.
How to play
- Spread out 8 hoops (river stones) and 4 mats (caves); students sit in a circle and hear the start of the story (2 min).
- Scene one: we pack our backpacks and hike through the thick jungle, pushing leaves aside with our arms and lifting our knees high (3 min).
- Scene two: we cross the river by jumping from hoop to hoop without getting wet; if you step outside, start again from the riverbank (3 min).
- Scene three: we climb invisible vines in place and turn into monkeys, snakes and parrots as the teacher calls out each animal (4 min).
- Scene four: a storm hits (loud claps) and everyone hurries to the caves, crouching quietly without pushing (3 min).
- Scene five: we walk back to camp in slow motion, and each student shows with one gesture their favorite part of the trip (5 min).
Rules
- Listen to the story quietly and act only when the teacher gives the signal.
- Everyone fits in the caves: nobody gets left out and nobody pushes.
- Jump between hoops with feet together and look where you land.
Variations
Easier
Remove the hoop river and do every scene walking, with no jumping or running.
Standard
Tell all five scenes in order, using hoops and mats as props.
Harder
Let students suggest a new animal or obstacle in each scene for the whole class to act out.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student acts out animals with arms, head and voice and crosses the river on a path of closer hoops or in a wheelchair.
- Autism: preview the story with picture cards for each scene and give a heads-up before the storm so the clapping is not startling.
- Fitness level: a student who needs a break can be the guide who points out the trail during one scene.
Learning goals
- Act out characters and actions from a story using the body.
- Combine locomotor movements, jumps and shapes to follow a narrative.
- Respond to signals and respect classmates' personal space during play.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 8
- mats: 4
Teacher tip
Use an expressive voice: the pace of your narration sets the intensity. Keep the ending ready so you can finish calmly even if time runs short.
