Invisible-String Puppets
Children are puppets with invisible strings tied to different body parts; when the puppeteer pulls a string, only that part moves. It builds isolated movement of each body segment and creative movement.
How to play
- The teacher shows how a puppet moves: pulling a pretend string on a child's wrist so the hand floats up, all floppy (2 min).
- Everyone stands in place; the teacher-puppeteer pulls strings on the head, a shoulder, an elbow, a hand, and only that part rises (3 min).
- Pull strings on the legs: the knee lifts, the foot takes a little step, the hip slides to the side (2 min).
- With music, the puppeteer walks the puppets around, pulling strings to walk, hop or turn; when the strings are cut, all the puppets flop gently to the floor (3 min).
- In pairs, one is the puppeteer and the other the puppet for a little while, then switch (2 min).
Rules
- The puppet moves only the part being pulled.
- When the strings are cut, we sink down slowly, no crashing.
- The puppeteer pulls gently so the puppet doesn't break.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use only big parts and the teacher is always the puppeteer.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, add knees, elbows and shoulders, and do the walk with music.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the puppeteer pulls two strings at once or small parts like the wrist or ankle, and kids play in pairs.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a seated puppet with strings on the head, shoulders, arms and hands; the flop is done by dropping the arms.
- Hearing impairment: the puppeteer makes a big, visible pulling gesture toward the moving part.
- Autism: warn before the flop with "three, two, one, cut the strings!"
Learning goals
- Move each body part separately on a signal.
- Tell the difference between a tight body and a floppy one.
- Express a puppet character with the body.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hand drum: 1
- Music
Teacher tip
Make the pulling gesture very clear and always from above. Kids love the flop when the strings are cut; practice it from kneeling first so no one bumps.
