Into Your Funnel
In pairs, one child gently tosses a sock ball and the other catches it in a funnel; then they switch. It builds matching throwing force to a partner and moving to receive.

How to play
- Each pair sets two hoops on the ground facing each other, close together; each child stands in a hoop (1 min).
- The thrower tosses the sock ball underhand, like handing over a present, and the partner catches it with the funnel (3 min).
- Switch roles: now the catcher throws (2 min).
- Take one step back with your hoop and keep tossing even more gently (3 min).
- Now the catcher may step out of the hoop to chase the ball with the funnel (2 min).
- Clink funnels like a toast to thank your partner (1 min).
Rules
- I toss underhand and soft so my friend can catch it.
- I say my partner's name before I toss.
- If they miss, that's okay: we pick it up and keep going.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, stand very close; an adult or partner drops the ball almost on top of the funnel.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, stand a couple of steps apart and toss underhand.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, stand farther apart; the catcher moves out of the hoop to receive.
Adaptations
- Less dexterity: the catcher uses a small basket or box instead of the funnel.
- Hearing impairment: before tossing, hold up the ball and make eye contact as the signal.
- Autism: keep a familiar, steady partner and the same distance throughout, with a "toss / catch" card to show turns.
Learning goals
- Adjust throwing force to the distance.
- Receive an object with a tool while moving the body.
- Cooperate with a partner and take turns.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Bottle funnels: 25
- Sock balls: 25
- Hoops: 25
Teacher tip
Line pairs up in two parallel rows, all throwing the same direction, so balls don't cross. Keep repeating "underhand": overhand tosses at age 3 go anywhere.
