Human Machine Build
One at a time, group members join in with a repeated movement and a sound until they form a living machine that runs at one shared rhythm. Students practice creativity, shared rhythm and teamwork.
How to play
- Demo: a volunteer makes a repeated movement with a sound (arm up and down, 'shh'); another adds a piece that fits, and so on up to five (3 min).
- Form 5 groups of 5; each group builds its machine in 3 minutes without planning ahead (3 min).
- The teacher gives control commands: 'faster', 'slower', 'breaking down', 'power off'; the machines react together (3 min).
- Each group decides what its machine makes (ice cream, shoes, storms) and rehearses it with a start and an end (4 min).
- Showcase: each machine runs for 30 seconds while the class guesses what it makes (4 min).
- Quick reflection on how they agreed without talking (1 min).
Rules
- Each piece touches the machine with one hand at most and never pushes.
- Repeat your movement exactly the same way so the machine does not break.
- While one group performs, the rest watch without interrupting.
Variations
Easier
Build one giant machine with the whole class, guided by the teacher.
Standard
Each group of five builds and presents its machine.
Harder
Connect two machines: the last piece of one passes the motion to the first piece of another.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can be the center piece who sets the rhythm with arms and sound from the chair.
- Shyness: the student can join last with a small piece and no sound.
- Visual impairment: the machine uses a light shoulder touch so the student can feel the rhythm.
Learning goals
- Create a repeated movement that fits with others' movements.
- Adjust personal rhythm to the group's as commands change.
- Work together without words to build a shared creation.
Teacher tip
Insist on simple, repeatable pieces; machines break down when someone keeps improvising. The speed commands are usually the most fun part.
