Hoop Magnifiers: Pictures Hidden on the Walls
Using a hoop as a giant magnifying glass, detectives search for bugs drawn on cards and hidden at different heights: some way up high, some at floor level, some under a bench. To see them and frame them with the magnifier, kids must stretch, crouch or lie down, adjusting their posture to each spot.
How to play
- Before class, the teacher tapes twelve bug drawings on walls, table legs and under benches, at very different heights (1 min).
- Each detective takes a hoop, holds it out in front like a magnifier, and practices looking through it up, down and to the sides (2 min).
- The teacher asks “Who can find the ladybug?” and everyone searches; when they spot it, they frame it with the hoop in whatever position it takes (4 min).
- Now each detective hunts for any bugs they like and, after finding one, moves like that bug to the next (4 min).
- Gather and each child says whether their favorite bug was up high, down low or under something, and everyone points to it (2 min).
- Lay the hoops on the floor and curl up inside them like sleeping bugs (1 min).
Rules
- I carry my magnifier in front of me and never throw it.
- I frame the bug without touching it.
- If another detective is there, we share the bug and look together.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use six large drawings at easy heights (standing or kneeling) and the teacher searches with them.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use twelve drawings at varied heights, including some under benches.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the drawings are tiny or the same color as the wall, and kids must frame them standing on one foot or lying on their backs.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: place some drawings at wheelchair height, and a buddy helps look for the higher ones.
- Visual impairment: use raised felt or foam bugs, found by feeling along the walls at different heights.
- More skill: hold the magnifier with just one hand and switch hands at each bug.
Learning goals
- Adjust body posture to different heights.
- Explore the space paying attention to details.
- Use the concepts up, down and under.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hoops: 25
- Bug picture cards: 12
- Tape: 1
Teacher tip
Use small hoops if you have them, since they work better as magnifiers. Kids usually only search at eye level, so keep prompting “What about up high? Under the bench?” to get them changing positions.
