Hide-and-Seek Inside the Cones
We play hide-and-seek inside an area marked by cones where you can always see the teacher, and whoever is found joins the seeker hand in hand. Kids learn to hide in a safe space and to play hide-and-seek with nobody knocked out.
How to play
- Walk the cone border together while the teacher points out good spots and off-limits ones: inside rooms, behind doors or up on anything (2 min).
- Golden rule: from your hiding spot you must be able to see the teacher; practice hiding and peeking out to check (2 min).
- First game: the teacher counts at the wall and seeks; each child found holds hands with the teacher and they keep looking together (4 min).
- Second game: a child counts, and everyone found joins a hand-in-hand chain with the seeker (4 min).
- On “Peekaboo, come out!”, anyone still hidden comes back to the meeting spot alone, and we count how many seekers there were by the end (3 min).
Rules
- Hide only inside the cones.
- From your spot, you can see the teacher.
- If you're found, hold hands and seek together.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use a small, open area and hide in pairs holding hands.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use a medium area with a few hiding places (tree, bench, pillar).
Harder
For 5-year-olds, use a larger area; when the seeker finds someone, they must say where that child was hiding before taking their hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: offer accessible ground-level spots; the child can seek with a helper who runs to the found kids.
- Autism: rehearse a familiar, fixed hiding place beforehand and always use the same end signal.
- Visual impairment: hide with a buddy; as the seeker, find others by their voices when they call “Here!”
Learning goals
- Move safely within boundaries.
- Choose a suitable hiding place.
- Play hide-and-seek without elimination.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Cones: 10
- Sidewalk chalk: 4
Teacher tip
Teach the border on day one and keep it the same for weeks so the recess game always has the same limits. Kids often hide where they can't see an adult, so peek out together to check.
