Helium Hoop Challenge
In groups of 6, students balance a hula hoop on just their index fingers and must lower it to the floor without anyone losing contact. It sounds easy, but the hoop keeps rising; students practice communication, patience, and planning as a team.
How to play
- Make 4 groups of 6 (one of 7) in circles, arms straight out at chest height with index fingers extended. The teacher lays a hoop across each group's fingers.
- Challenge: lower the hoop to the floor without any finger losing contact. If someone loses contact, the hoop goes back up. First free try (3 min).
- Huddle: each group talks about what happened and agrees on a strategy, such as one person counting while everyone lowers together (2 min).
- Second try with the strategy. Groups that succeed raise it again and try to lower it in under 30 seconds (4 min).
- Finish: combine two groups with one hoop and try it with 12 people (4 min).
Rules
- Only the tops of the index fingers touch the hoop, with no gripping.
- If a finger comes off, start over from the top.
- Talk about what went wrong, not who messed up.
- Bend your knees going down and leave space so no one bumps heads.
Variations
Easier
Groups of 4, using two fingers on each hand.
Standard
Groups of 6 with one index finger on each hand.
Harder
The group lowers the hoop without talking, using only eye contact and gestures.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the goal is lowering the hoop to the knees of the student using a wheelchair.
- Autism: model the task visually, and offer the role of counting out loud.
- Skill level: groups that finish fast use a pole, which is harder to balance.
Learning goals
- Plan a group strategy to solve a challenge.
- Communicate respectfully when something goes wrong.
- Control your own movement to match the group's.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hula hoops: 5
Teacher tip
The hoop rises because everyone pushes up a little to keep contact, so let students discover it. If a group gets frustrated, have them lower it just a few inches and celebrate.
