Healthy Spine Circuit
A five-station circuit where students practice key habits for a healthy back: lining up the spine with a pole, sitting and standing correctly, strengthening the core, mobilizing the spine, and lifting safely. It builds posture awareness and trunk strength.
How to play
- Set up 5 stations, each with a card: pole along the back touching head, upper back, and tailbone; sit-to-stand from a chair without swinging; plank and dead bug on a mat; cat-cow; lifting a sandbag from the floor with a squat.
- Explain each station with a quick demo (4 min).
- Form 5 groups of 5; each group works 2 minutes per station in pairs or threes who watch and correct each other, rotating on the whistle (12 min with rotations).
- At the pole station, partners check that all three contact points stay on the pole while walking.
- Run a short second round of 1 minute per station in which each student tries the exercise without looking at the card (5 min).
- Finish with 4 minutes sitting tall on the floor, sharing which station seems most useful for daily life.
Rules
- Poles are used only along the back; never swing them or point them at anyone.
- Always lift sandbags with bent knees and keep them close to the body.
- Move slowly and stay pain-free; if something hurts, stop and tell the teacher.
- Partners watch and coach, then switch roles halfway through.
Variations
Easier
Use only 3 stations (pole, chair, and sandbag) led by the teacher.
Standard
Five 2-minute stations with partner observation and a short second round.
Harder
Add a station for carrying a light box up a step and increase plank time.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student works from the chair on pole alignment, spine mobility, and lifting light objects from a table.
- Visual impairment: replace the cards with verbal cues and, with permission, hands-on guidance from a partner.
- Fitness level: every station has a supported and a harder version, such as a knee plank or a straight-arm plank.
Learning goals
- Recognize proper spinal alignment in different situations.
- Strengthen the trunk muscles that protect the back.
- Use proper technique to sit, stand, and lift.
Equipment for a class of 25
- poles: 6
- mats: 10
- chairs: 5
- sandbags: 5
- station cards: 5
Teacher tip
At the sandbag station many kids lock their knees and round their back; stay close during the first rotations. Use sandbags of 2 to 4 pounds at most.
