How to play
- The teacher sets up a mountain range in a line: cushions, stacked mats, a wedge and a landing mat (3 min).
- We make pairs and practice walking hand in hand, looking at each other (2 min).
- Pairs cross the range holding hands; if they need to let go to climb, they wait for their partner at the top (5 min).
- Second time: the leader calls out "Up!", "Down!", "Careful, squishy!" (3 min).
- Each pair says thank you with a high five (2 min).
Rules
- We go at the slower partner's pace.
- If my partner needs their hands to climb, I wait.
- One pair per mountain.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a range of just cushions and one mat, with an adult going along.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, the full range.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, one partner closes their eyes on the flat part and the other guides.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the pair takes a parallel path on the floor beside the range.
- Autism: can choose a partner or go with the adult if touch is overwhelming (holding a scarf works).
- Visual impairment: the partner describes what's coming and the adult stays close.
Learning goals
- Cooperate on a climbing route.
- Match one's pace to a partner's.
- Communicate to move ahead safely.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colchonetas: 6
- cojines: 8
- cuña de gomaespuma: 1
Teacher tip
Pair a confident child with a more cautious one. If they let go, that's fine: what matters is that they wait for each other.
