Giant Puzzle Relay
Teams run relays to collect pieces of a giant puzzle spread across the field and put it together. At the end, every team's puzzle joins into one big class picture. Students practice running, spatial awareness, and cooperation between groups.
How to play
- Make 5 teams of 5, each lined up behind a starting cone. About 60 feet away, inside a hoop of their color, are 8 face-down cardstock puzzle pieces.
- On the whistle, the first runner on each team grabs one piece, runs back, and high-fives the next runner. Only one piece per trip (4 min).
- While teammates run, students who have finished start building the puzzle next to the starting cone.
- Round two: the pieces are mixed among all the hoops, and each team must find only its color without moving other teams' pieces (6 min).
- When a team finishes, it goes to help another team. At the end, all 5 puzzles are joined in the center to make the class picture (6 min).
Rules
- Run on the right side of the lane so you don't collide with returning runners.
- Take only one piece per trip and leave only after the high five.
- Don't hide or move other teams' pieces.
- The class wins when the whole picture is complete.
Variations
Easier
Use 4-piece puzzles placed 30 feet away.
Standard
Use 8-piece puzzles placed 60 feet away.
Harder
Each trip uses a different movement (hopping on one foot, side shuffling, zigzagging through cones).
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student builds the puzzle while teammates bring pieces, or travels a shorter distance.
- Visual impairment: the team's pieces have a raised or textured mark so they can be identified.
- Fitness level: students who need more challenge do two trips in a row; tired students may walk.
Learning goals
- Run with changes of pace in a relay task.
- Cooperate with your own team and with other teams.
- Organize team tasks toward a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- giant puzzle pieces: 40
- cones: 10
- hoops: 5
Teacher tip
Make the puzzles by cutting 5 large colored cardstock sheets with a drawing that forms a mural when joined. Laminate them so they last for years.
