Frozen Pictures Team Challenge
Teams have ten seconds to make a frozen picture with their bodies of a scene the teacher calls out, such as a wedding or a ball game, and then link three pictures into a story. Students practice expressive movement, quick teamwork and using space.
How to play
- Form 5 teams of 5 spread around the space; explain that a frozen picture does not move or talk (1 min).
- Call a scene and count down from 10: birthday party, beach, soccer game, zoo, thunderstorm; at 0, everyone freezes (5 min).
- Walk through the pictures and tap a character's shoulder: only that person says one line about how they feel (2 min).
- Each team plans a three-picture story with a beginning, a problem and an ending, and rehearses moving between them on a count of three (5 min).
- Each team shows its story while the others close their eyes between pictures and then guess what happened (4 min).
- Discuss which pictures were easiest to read and why: levels, eye focus, gestures (1 min).
Rules
- Every team member is in every picture.
- Nobody climbs on or carries another classmate.
- Hold your pose silently until the signal.
Variations
Easier
Give 20 seconds and very familiar scenes, like recess or the cafeteria.
Standard
Make pictures in 10 seconds and build a three-picture story.
Harder
Each picture must use three levels (low, middle, high) and one character looking at the audience.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can be the center of the picture from the wheelchair, with the team built around them.
- Shyness: the student can choose to be an object in the scene (a tree, a door) instead of a character.
- Hearing impairment: write or sketch the scene on a whiteboard as you call it.
Learning goals
- Show a situation clearly with a still body shape.
- Organize quickly as a group without conflict.
- Tell a story through a sequence of body pictures.
Teacher tip
Encourage different levels and eye directions: that is what makes a picture readable. If a team argues, give a different member the director role each round.
