Four Seasons Movement Story with Scarves
Each with a colored scarf, students travel through a whole year acting out each season: flowers sprouting, the hot sun, falling leaves and snow. Students practice creative movement, changes of speed and moving with a prop.
How to play
- Hand each student a scarf and allow one minute of free exploring: toss it, twirl it, hide under it (2 min).
- Spring: crouched like seeds, students grow slowly into flowers that open with the scarf as petals (4 min).
- Summer: the scarf is the sun or a wave; students move quickly, jump waves and fan themselves in the heat (4 min).
- Fall: the scarf is a leaf; students toss it, let it float down and spin gently to the floor with it (4 min).
- Winter: students wrap up in the scarf, shiver, take short steps on ice and form groups of four to keep warm (4 min).
- Ending: spring returns and each student invents their own flower with the scarf to close the story (2 min).
Rules
- Never tie the scarf around your neck or use it to pull anyone.
- Change seasons only on the teacher's signal.
- In winter, walk slowly so nobody slips or bumps.
Variations
Easier
Use only two very different seasons, summer and winter.
Standard
Travel through all four seasons with the scarf as the star.
Harder
In groups of four, each group prepares one season and teaches it to the class.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: every scene can be done with the scarf from the chair, using arm and torso movement.
- Visual impairment: use very bright scarves or ones with small bells sewn on.
- Autism: show pictures of the four seasons and their order ahead of time.
Learning goals
- Show changes in nature with the body.
- Vary speed and level of movement to fit each scene.
- Use a prop to support expression.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored scarves: 25
- music
Teacher tip
Play a different piece of music for each season to help the mood shift. Collect the scarves in a bin at the end so none are left on the floor.
