Four-Goal Soccer 2v2
Two-on-two small-sided soccer games where each pair defends two small cone goals and attacks the other two. Students practice dribbling, switching play toward the open goal, and coordinated defense with a partner.
How to play
- Set up six 40 x 33 ft fields with two 5-ft goals in the corners of each end line, and put two pairs in different pinnie colors on each field (3 min).
- No goalies: a goal counts when the ball crosses an opponent's goal below knee height, by dribbling or with a ground pass.
- After each goal, the pair that was scored on restarts with a pass from its end line.
- Play 3-minute rounds with 30-second breaks to agree on a tip, such as "If they cover one goal, switch to the other" (12 min).
- Winning pairs move up one field and losing pairs move down; ties are settled with rock, paper, scissors.
- At the end, ask when it was better to dribble and when to pass (3 min).
Rules
- No hands; if the ball goes out, restart with a ground pass.
- No tackling from behind and no slide tackles.
- Nobody parks in front of their own goal: defend on the move.
- Safety: shots stay on the ground, with 6 ft between fields.
Variations
Easier
Use 8-ft goals, and goals count even if slightly off the ground.
Standard
Play 2v2 with 5-ft goals and 3-minute rounds.
Harder
A goal only counts after a pass between partners or in a different goal than the last one.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play with a foam ball rolled by hand, with goals counting double.
- Shyness or autism: always start on the same field with the same partner.
- Fitness level: lengthen the breaks or shrink the field to 33 x 26 ft.
Learning goals
- Dribble with control while changing direction.
- Choose the less-defended goal by reading the opponents.
- Coordinate defense with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 8
- cones: 48
- pinnies: 12
Teacher tip
Kids tend to attack the same goal every time; praise switches of play out loud. Keep spare balls in a hoop in the middle.
