Forward Roll Down the Incline Mat
A three-station forward roll progression: first down an incline (a mat propped on a bench), then on a flat mat, and finally linking two rolls. Students practice the tuck position, hand placement, and orienting their body as they roll.
How to play
- Form 3 groups of 8 or 9. Set up 3 two-lane stations: A, mats propped on the end of a gym bench as an incline; B, two flat mats end to end; C, three mats in a row.
- Spend 3 minutes demonstrating the 'little ball': chin to chest, knees together, hands on shins. Everyone rocks back and forth seated like a rocking chair.
- Station A: squat at the top of the incline, hands shoulder-width apart, look at your belly button, and roll down to a sitting position. 3 or 4 reps each.
- Station B: same roll on a flat mat with a beanbag held between chin and chest; if it stays put, the head was tucked. Waiting students watch and give feedback.
- Station C: two rolls in a row and stand up without using your hands; anyone who nails it finishes with a jump.
- Every 5 minutes, whistle and rotate clockwise until everyone has been through all three stations.
Rules
- Never roll on the top of your head: hands and the back of the neck take the weight, not the forehead.
- One student per mat at a time; the next one waits until the mat is clear.
- Mats must touch with no gaps; if they slide apart, stop and fix them.
- Anyone with neck discomfort tells the teacher and practices only the rocking chair.
Variations
Easier
Stay on the incline the whole time with a partner gently pushing the back.
Standard
Rotate through all three stations using the beanbag at station B.
Harder
Link a roll, a jump with a half turn, and another roll at station C.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the rocking chair and log rolls sideways on the mat, with assistance if needed.
- Autism or shyness: keep the same group and starting station, with the step sequence drawn on a card.
- Lower fitness: cut to 2 reps per station and allow seated rest on the mat.
Learning goals
- Perform a forward roll with a correct tuck position.
- Coordinate hand placement with chin tuck to roll safely.
- Observe a partner and give one simple correction.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 12
- gym bench: 2
- beanbags: 6
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is spreading the knees and landing on the forehead; stand at station A, where most questions come up, and spot the neck and hips of anyone who needs it.
