Flag Rugby with a Neutral Scrum Half

A five-on-five flag rugby game with a neutral scrum half who always plays for the attacking team: after every flag pull, the ball is set on the ground and the scrum half picks it up and distributes it. Students practice backward passing, supporting the ball carrier, and attacking with an overload.

How to play

  1. Cone off a 100 x 65 ft field with 10-ft try zones; form teams of 5 wearing flag belts plus one neutral player in a different pinnie, and set up a second field if needed (3 min).
  2. The attacking team runs with the ball and passes only backward or sideways; a try is worth 1 point.
  3. When a carrier's flag is pulled, they stop and set the ball between their feet, and the scrum half picks it up and passes to a teammate within 3 seconds.
  4. Defenders must back up 10 ft after every flag pull; on the fourth flag pull of the same possession, the ball goes to the other team and the scrum half switches sides.
  5. Play 4-minute games, with a new scrum half after each one, until several students have had a turn (16 min).
  6. Finish with 3 minutes of discussion: where was the best place to run to get the pass from the scrum half?

Rules

Variations

Easier

Possession switches on the sixth flag pull, and defenders back up 16 ft.

Standard

Play 5v5 with a neutral scrum half and a turnover on the fourth flag pull.

Harder

Turnover on the third flag pull, and the scrum half may only pass, not run.

Adaptations

Teacher tip

The scrum half is the key role: start with students who talk and direct teammates. If the attack stalls, remind support players to line up behind the ball.
