Find the Twin Card and Move Like It
Each child holds a large animal card and searches the playground, among face-down cards, for its twin; once found, they travel back to the zoo moving like that animal. Children train visual memory and practice different ways of moving.
How to play
- Spread one card of each pair face down around the playground and show the animals in play: elephant, frog, penguin, kangaroo, snake (2 min).
- Each child gets the matching card, looks at the animal and acts it out in place so they won't forget it (1 min).
- Everyone searches for their twin at the same time: lift a card, look, and if it's not yours, put it back face down (4 min).
- Once found, travel back to the zoo (the middle of the playground) moving like your animal, holding both cards (2 min).
- Spread the found cards face down again, hand everyone a new animal and play another round (4 min).
- At the zoo, all the animals lie down to sleep and the teacher wakes them up one by one by name (1 min).
Rules
- If the card isn't mine, I put it back face down where it was.
- I walk around without stepping on the cards.
- I go back to the zoo moving like my animal.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, cards are face up and there are only five different animals, so several kids look for the same one.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, cards are face down with eight different animals.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the match isn't identical but related: a mother finds her baby, or an animal finds its food.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: put some cards on a bench or table at the child's height; they act out the animal with their arms.
- Visual impairment: cards have a texture glued on (yarn, sandpaper, cotton) and the child finds the one that feels the same.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher shows each animal with its gesture before starting, so it doesn't depend on spoken directions.
Learning goals
- Remember a picture and recognize it among others.
- Travel in different ways by imitating animals.
- Search in an orderly way, leaving things as they were.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Large animal cards: 50
Teacher tip
Laminate the cards at letter size and weigh them down with a stone on windy days. Kids often pocket cards that aren't theirs, so model the lift, look and put back routine clearly.
