Filling the Giant Bottle Cup by Cup
On a hot day, children carry water in cups from a tub to a clear jug in relay turns, walking so they don't spill. The whole class tries to fill the jug up to the line before the sand runs out, practicing body control on the move, focus and shared effort.
How to play
- Put the tub of water on one side and the jug with a funnel about 20 feet away, with a strip of tape halfway up: that's our goal line (2 min).
- The teacher shows how to carry the cup: two hands, eyes on the water, little duck steps (2 min).
- First round in four lines: each child fills a cup, walks to the jug, pours it into the funnel and walks back to hand the cup to the next child (3 min).
- Flip the timer: will the water reach the line before the sand runs out? (3 min).
- Move the line higher and try again, this time walking backward on the way back (3 min).
- Water the yard plants with the jug and celebrate our record (2 min).
Rules
- I carry the cup with both hands.
- I walk, I don't run: water is treasure.
- I pour slowly into the funnel.
- If it spills, no problem: I fill it again.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use cups with handles, a 10-foot path and a low line.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, regular cups and a 20-foot path, as described.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, carry the cup with one hand or on a plate, and raise the line twice.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child carries the cup on a tray on the lap, or pours in the cups friends bring.
- Autism: warn that clothes may get a little wet and keep spare clothes in sight; offer the job of line watcher if preferred.
- Visual impairment: put a rubber band on the jug at the line so it can be felt, and mark a straight path with a rope.
Learning goals
- Control the body on the move while carrying something wobbly.
- Set a measurable goal together.
- Use water carefully and put it to good use afterward.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Tub of water: 1
- Plastic cups: 25
- Clear jug with funnel: 1
- Large sand timer: 1
Teacher tip
Save this for a hot day and clothes that can get wet. Kids tend to run and arrive with an empty cup, so show them the jug up close so they see every cup counts.
