Everybody's Sandcastle
The whole class builds one giant sandcastle by splitting up jobs: fillers who load pails, packers who press the sand, flippers who turn out the towers, and decorators who trim the wall. It builds a shared project, respect for others' work, and hand and arm coordination.
How to play
- We sit around the sandbox and the teacher draws the castle outline in the sand: here's the door, here are the towers (2 min).
- We hand out jobs with a gesture: fillers (shovel), packers (fist), flippers (turn over), and decorators (finger) (2 min).
- We build the wall: fillers fill and water, packers press, and flippers make towers with the molds (4 min).
- We switch jobs so everyone tries a new one and keep raising towers around the castle (4 min).
- Decorators, then everyone, add windows with a finger, paths, and a door (3 min).
- We tiptoe around the castle, name it together, and take a photo (3 min).
Rules
- The castle belongs to everyone: I don't step on it or knock it down.
- I do my job and help anyone who needs it.
- If a tower falls, we rebuild it together.
- I share the molds.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just two jobs (fill and flip), in small groups with one adult each.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, all four jobs and one switch halfway.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they decide at circle time what the castle will look like (how many towers, where the door goes) and organize to make it happen.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be a decorator or flipper at the sandbox edge, with sand brought over in a tray.
- Autism: pick a favorite job and keep it the whole game if switching is stressful.
- Hearing impairment: each job has its own gesture, and the teacher shows the switch gesture.
Learning goals
- Build a project together toward a shared goal.
- Coordinate hands and arms to fill, pack, and flip.
- Value and protect classmates' work.

Teacher tip
With a big class, build two castles with two adults. Water the sand well beforehand: dry sand crumbles and kids get frustrated. Take the photo: the next day they love seeing it and remembering who did what.
