Every Challenge Gets a Cheer
The group takes on small cooperative challenges and, when they pull one off, celebrates it in a different way with their bodies. It builds shared joy, celebrating together and cooperation without competing.
How to play
- In a circle, the teacher teaches four celebrations: a rain-sound clap, high fives with neighbors, the wave and the victory dance (2 min).
- Challenge 1: the whole group carries the ball on the bedsheet across the yard without dropping it. Celebrate with the wave! (3 min).
- Challenge 2: everyone passes through a hoop around the circle without letting go of hands. Celebrate with the rain clap! (3 min).
- Challenge 3: everyone sits down and stands up together without letting go of hands. Celebrate with the victory dance! (3 min).
- Repeat the favorite challenge and let children choose how to celebrate, or invent a new celebration (3 min).
- Big final celebration: high five every friend we can find (1 min).
Rules
- We're a team: we all win together.
- If something goes wrong, we try again.
- We celebrate without pushing or yelling in ears.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, do only the bedsheet challenge with one celebration and lots of tries.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, do all three challenges with their celebrations.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, add a no-talking rule for the hoop and let children invent a celebration for each challenge.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: pass the hoop over the wheelchair with help; swap sitting and standing for arms up and down.
- Autism: warn before noisy celebrations and offer a thumbs-up celebration.
- Visual impairment: describe each challenge aloud and keep the child holding hands in the circle.
Learning goals
- Cooperate to reach a shared goal.
- Celebrate group success with the body.
- Accept mistakes and try again.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Large bedsheet: 1
- Foam ball: 1
- Hoops: 1
Teacher tip
Cheer for the near misses too with “So close, again!”: the message is that the joy is in doing it together. Don't time it or compare groups.
