Each Animal's Chalk Trail
Holding chalk and crouching low, children travel around the yard as different animals and leave a trail on the ground: the snake zigzags, the bunny leaves little dashes between hops, the duck draws a long, low line. Then classmates guess which animal made each trail.
How to play
- Each child takes a piece of sidewalk chalk; the teacher shows how to walk crouched with the chalk touching the ground (2 min).
- Everyone at once waddles like a duck in a squat, dragging the chalk: it makes a long, low line (2 min).
- We switch animals: the snake moves forward in a zigzag; the bunny hops, crouches to draw a little dash, and hops again (4 min).
- Each child secretly picks an animal and leaves its trail in one part of the yard (3 min).
- We walk through each other's trails and guess which animal passed by, moving like that animal along its trail (3 min).
Rules
- Chalk is dragged on the ground, not thrown.
- Each animal makes its trail without stepping on others' trails.
- When we guess, we act like the animal without running.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use only duck and snake, with the teacher drawing the trail in front of them.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, add the bunny and the guessing game.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they invent a new animal with its own way of moving and its own trail.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: tape chalk to a long stick so they can draw from the wheelchair as they move.
- Autism: use cards showing each animal and its trail to preview the activity.
- Visual impairment: draw in sand or dirt with a stick so they can feel the groove with their feet.
Learning goals
- Move in different ways while squatting and hopping.
- Connect a movement with the trail it leaves.
- Choose and create their own path.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Sidewalk chalk: 25
Teacher tip
Break long chalk sticks in half: shorter, chunkier pieces are easier to grip and don't snap when dragged. Squat-walking is tiring, so switch to something upright every minute or so.
