Dust Cloth Skaters: Shine the Floor
Kids and grown-ups put a cloth under each foot and glide across the floor like skaters while "cleaning" the room to music, just like you can at home with two old rags. It works leg and arm coordination, balance while sliding, and turns household chores into a game.
How to play
- Each pair gets four cloths; the teacher shows how to put them under your feet (in socks or smooth-soled shoes) and slide without lifting your feet (1 min).
- The child slides slowly holding the grown-up's hand, first forward, then sideways (2 min).
- The music starts and everyone "mops" the floor by skating: long glides, short glides, in circles (3 min).
- The teacher points out "spills" (the corners of the room) and pairs glide over to clean them (3 min).
- Switch roles: the grown-up sits on the floor and the child skates in circles around them, polishing (2 min).
- Collect the cloths, fold them and stack them in the basket (1 min).
Rules
- Keep your feet on the cloths.
- Glide slowly, no running.
- If you slip, just get back up. No big deal!
- Fold your cloth when we finish.
Variations
Easier
Age 3: one cloth under one foot while the other foot pushes, like a scooter.
Standard
Age 4: cloths under both feet, moving while holding the grown-up's hand.
Harder
Age 5: glide on their own, spin in place and stop at the tambourine signal.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child slides cloths with their hands on a table or the floor, cleaning to the music.
- Poor balance: glide with both hands on a chair or on their grown-up, like a handrail.
- Autism or texture sensitivity: they can wear shoes over the cloths or start by sliding them with their hands.
Learning goals
- Coordinate leg movements while gliding.
- Keep balance on a moving surface.
- Discover that household chores can be a shared game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Dust cloths or rags: 50
- Music
Teacher tip
This works on smooth floors (vinyl, tile, hardwood), never on carpet or sand. Clear away tables and chairs and make it clear there's no running: fast gliding is when kids fall.
