Don't Ring the Jingle Rope
Children cross over and under elastic cords hung with jingle bells and ribbons without making them ring or move, choosing whichever gap suits them. It builds body control, spatial awareness and moving slowly on purpose.
How to play
- Tie three cords between chairs at different heights (ankle, knee and one very high to go under), with bells and ribbons hanging (2 min).
- Touch the cords on purpose: watch the ribbons move and hear the bells ring (1 min).
- Each child chooses how to cross: over, under, crawling, or rolling a wheelchair through the high gap (4 min).
- Now we're silent sneaks: cross in slow motion so nothing rings or moves (3 min).
- Cross in pairs holding hands, looking for the best gap together (2 min).
- Untie the cords and ring all the bells at once to say goodbye (2 min).
Rules
- If it rings, no problem: I stop, breathe and go slower.
- I cross when the gap is clear.
- I pick my way: over, under or through the high gap.
- We don't step on or grab the cords.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, one cord at knee height and crawl underneath.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, three cords at different heights and crossing in slow motion.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, zigzag the cords and cross while carrying a beanbag on the head or in hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: there's always a high, wide gap to roll through; the challenge is not letting the ribbons brush their head.
- Blind or low vision: the child touches the cord before crossing to feel its height and a buddy describes the gap; the bells tell them if they brushed it.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: the ribbons show when a cord has moved, so the child gets the same information.
Learning goals
- Control the body to move without touching an obstacle.
- Judge heights and spaces.
- Slow down on purpose.
Equipment for a class of 25
- elastic cords: 3
- large jingle bells: 10
- colored ribbons: 10
- chairs: 6
Teacher tip
Use wide sewing elastic, not stiff rope: it gives if someone trips. Sew the bells on very firmly and check that none can come loose.
