Don't Let the Hoop Fall!
In pairs, one child holds a hoop upright on the floor and lets go, and the other has to catch it before it hits the ground. Children practice reaction speed and paying attention to their partner.
How to play
- In pairs: one holds the hoop upright with a finger on top, and the other stands very close, ready (1 min).
- The holder says "Go!" and lifts the finger; the partner grabs the hoop before it goes "plop" (2 min).
- If they catch it, they take a tiny step back for next time; if not, they stay where they are (2 min).
- Switch roles: now the other partner holds (2 min).
- New challenges: let go without saying "Go!", catch with the other hand, or start from sitting (2 min).
- Lay the hoop flat and the pair shares a hug or a high five (1 min).
Rules
- I let go of the hoop; I don't push it.
- I catch it with my hands, no diving on the floor.
- If it falls, no big deal: again!
- I move back only one tiny step at a time.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher holds the hoop and children take turns from very close, always with "Go!"
Standard
For 4-year-olds, pairs with "Go!" and tiny steps back.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, no voice cue, only watching the partner's finger, and starting from sitting or turning around from facing away.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the hoop is released next to the wheelchair, within arm's reach.
- Hearing loss: the cue is visual, the lifting finger, with no "Go!"
- Visual impairment: play with a voice cue from very close, starting with one hand touching the hoop.
Learning goals
- React quickly to a visual or sound cue.
- Move to catch an object before it falls.
- Cooperate in pairs, taking turns in each role.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hoops: 13
Teacher tip
Leave lots of space between pairs because children lunge toward the hoop without looking around. The hoop stands longer if held straight: teach holders not to tilt it.
