Delivery Robots on the Floor Lines
Children are delivery robots carrying packages (balls) along colored tape paths stuck to the floor to baskets at the end. They practice spatial orientation, following straight and curved paths, and moving with control.
How to play
- The teacher has taped four colored paths (straight, zigzag, curve and spiral), each ending at a basket (2 min).
- Robots learn to follow the line: walk with feet on the tape without stepping off (2 min).
- First delivery: grab a package, choose a path and carry it to the basket (3 min).
- Color deliveries: the teacher calls "Package to the blue path!" and we follow that one (2 min).
- Special deliveries: carry the package walking backward, sideways or crawling along the straight line (2 min).
- Robots return to base and recharge sitting down (1 min).
Rules
- Robots stay on the line.
- I carry one package at a time.
- If I meet another robot head-on, we both step aside and pass.
- I place the package in the basket, no throwing.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, straight paths and one curve, and they can walk beside the line.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, all four paths with feet on the tape.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, deliver two packages to two different baskets and use special ways of walking.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: make wide paths (two parallel tapes) to roll along in the wheelchair with the package on the lap.
- Visual impairment: tape a rope to the floor so the path can be followed by foot, and put a bell in the basket.
- Autism: always start on the same path, then offer a new one.
Learning goals
- Follow straight, curved and zigzag paths.
- Find their way through space toward a destination.
- Move while carrying an object.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Colored tape: 4
- Soft balls: 25
- Baskets: 4
Teacher tip
Tape the paths before class and check they lie flat: loose tape is a tripping hazard. Make the paths cross at some point, because passing without bumping is part of the game.
