Dance With Everyone: New Song, New Partner
Every time the music changes, children find a new partner and dance together, copying a step one of them invents. It builds creative movement, imitation, and playing with everyone in the group.
How to play
- The teacher explains the signal: when the music changes, find a new partner; then demonstrates with a child “one invents, the other copies” (2 min).
- First, a slow song: pairs hold hands, sway, and turn slowly (2 min).
- The music changes (fast): new partner; one invents a step and the other copies, and at a clap they switch who invents (2 min).
- The music changes (march): new partner; they parade side by side with elbows linked (2 min).
- The music changes (happy): new partner and a mirror dance, face to face, without touching (3 min).
- Calm music: everyone gathers in a hand-holding circle and sways slowly (1 min).
Rules
- When the music changes, I find a new friend.
- I copy my partner's dance.
- If someone is alone, I invite them to dance.
- I dance without bumping into anyone.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher dances in front and pairs just copy the teacher while holding hands.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, one invents and the other copies, with a new partner each song.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, each pair invents a step together and teaches it to the group at the end.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: signal the song change by flicking the lights or holding up a colored card.
- Limited mobility: the child dances from the wheelchair and partners copy their arm and upper-body moves.
- Autism: moderate volume, a gesture before each change, and the option to keep the same partner if switching is overwhelming.
Learning goals
- Express themselves through movement to different music.
- Invent and imitate movements.
- Dance with different classmates.

Teacher tip
Prepare a short playlist of instrumental songs in different styles, about a minute each. If you see kids without partners, make it a group rule: “If you have a partner, go find someone who doesn't.”
