Crawl Through the Fabric Worm's Belly
A super-long fabric tunnel is a wiggly worm: some children hold it from outside and rock it, squeeze it, or make it wave while others crawl through inside. It builds body awareness in a space that keeps changing, and trust in classmates.
How to play
- We join two or three tunnels on mats to make one long worm and introduce it: “It's hungry for crawling kids” (1 min).
- First the worm stays still: everyone takes turns crawling through its belly (2 min).
- Half the group kneels along the sides and gently rocks the worm while the other half crawls through (3 min).
- The worm digests: the outside kids gently press the fabric over the crawlers, like a hug (2 min).
- Switch groups: the crawlers now move the worm (3 min).
- The worm falls asleep stretched out and everyone lies beside it like little worms (1 min).
Rules
- Inside the worm I crawl forward.
- From outside I move the fabric; I never step or lie on it.
- If anyone says “Stop!”, the worm stays still.
- I wait for the child ahead to come out before I go in.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a single short tunnel, the worm only rocks, and the teacher waits at the exit.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, linked tunnels and all three worm moves.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they slide through on their backs or crawl backward, and the outside kids make waves to a made-up chant: “Wiggle worm, wiggle worm, wiggle your belly, take a turn.”
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child lies inside the tunnel and classmates move the fabric around them without needing to crawl, or they move the worm from outside while seated.
- Autism: the child can choose only the still worm, or only rock it from outside; the “hug” pressure is offered, never forced.
- Hearing impairment: “Stop!” comes with two taps on the fabric the child can feel from inside.
Learning goals
- Feel the body in contact with moving fabric.
- Crawl with control in a narrow space.
- Trust classmates and take care of whoever is inside.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Fabric play tunnels: 3
- Mats: 4
Teacher tip
Put mats underneath and don't link more than three tunnels: little ones get anxious when they can't see the exit. Teach the word “Stop!” first and always honor it; that's what makes kids feel safe going in.
