Caterpillar to Butterfly Circuit
A four-station circuit tells a butterfly's life story: the egg on the leaf, the caterpillar crawling and munching through the tunnel, the cocoon they wrap up in, and the butterfly that flies away. It combines crawling, rolling and running with a thread of pretend play.
How to play
- The teacher tells the story and models each station: egg (curled up on the mat), caterpillar (crawl through the tunnel and “eat” leaves), cocoon (wrap up in the fabric with help, face out) and butterfly (come out with a scarf in each hand) (3 min).
- First round together in a line behind the teacher, station by station (4 min).
- Free rounds: each child does the circuit at their own pace and, after the butterfly, drops the scarves in the basket and starts again as an egg (5 min).
- The butterfly garden: everyone with scarf wings flies together around the room, swooping up and down (2 min).
- Each butterfly lands on a flower (a mat), folds its wings and rests (1 min).
Rules
- I do the stations in order: egg, caterpillar, cocoon, butterfly.
- One caterpillar at a time in the tunnel.
- In the cocoon, my face always stays out.
- Butterflies fly without bumping.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the cocoon is just curling up under fabric held by an adult, no wrapping, and always do the guided round.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, all four stations with free rounds.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they wrap each other in pairs (one helps the other make the cocoon), and the caterpillar moves like an inchworm (hands and feet come together and apart).
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: does the caterpillar wiggling on the mat and the butterfly flying with arms from their wheelchair; the cocoon is fabric over the shoulders.
- Autism: if the fabric feels too tight, the cocoon is a big hug around the knees; show the stations with photos in order.
- Visual impairment: goes with a buddy, and each station has a sound (the teacher claps at the cocoon).
Learning goals
- Complete a circuit following the order of a story.
- Crawl, roll on the floor and move while flapping the arms.
- Act out an animal's transformation with the body.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Play tunnel: 1
- Mats: 3
- Large pieces of fabric: 6
- Scarves: 50
Teacher tip
Keep one adult at the cocoon station: it's the only one that needs help and where a line forms. Never cover a child's head; say so beforehand and check every round.
