Captain Ball
Two teams battle for a foam ball and score by passing to their captain, who waits inside a hula hoop at the far end of the opponents' side. Students practice passing, getting open, using space, and guarding a target without contact.
How to play
- Cone off a 65 x 50 ft field with two hoops behind each end line; form teams of 6 in pinnies and place two captains from each team in the hoops on the opponents' end (3 min).
- Start at center; the ball only moves by passing, and the ball carrier may pivot but not travel.
- A point is scored when a captain catches a pass without leaving the hoop; if both captains catch it back to back, it counts double.
- Defenders intercept and block passing lanes, but never enter the 3-ft chalk zone around each hoop.
- After each point, the captain joins the field and the passer steps into the hoop, so everyone rotates through the role (14 min).
- Finish with one question: where was it easiest to pass to the captain from? (3 min).
Rules
- No walking with the ball, and you have 5 seconds to pass.
- No ripping the ball away; win it by intercepting or when it drops.
- Nobody enters the protected zone around the hoop.
- Safety: use a foam ball and keep passes below head height.
Variations
Easier
The attacking team gets an extra neutral player and 8 seconds to pass.
Standard
Play 6v6 with two captains per team and a 5-second count.
Harder
A point only counts if four teammates touched the ball first.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be a permanent captain with a bigger hoop, or a neutral player for the offense.
- Visual impairment: use a bright ball and call the receiver's name before passing.
- Fitness level: students who tire spend more time as captain, with less running.
Learning goals
- Pass accurately to a teammate at a fixed target.
- Move to open space to create a passing lane.
- Take on different roles and respect the playing zones.

Teacher tip
At first everyone chases the ball; freeze the game and show how to spread out. Captain Ball is a great lead-up to team handball.
