Box Tower From Biggest to Smallest

In small groups, children gather boxes from around the room, line them up from biggest to smallest, and build a tower that stays standing; at the end they blow it down. It practices ordering by size, stable building, and careful hands.

How to play

  1. Each group gets a hoop as its building lot; the teacher shows a good tower: big box at the bottom, small one on top (1 min).
  2. We go box hunting: each child brings back one box at a time and sets it by the group's hoop (2 min).
  3. We line the boxes up on the floor from biggest to smallest, comparing two at a time (3 min).
  4. We take turns building the tower, each child placing one box with both hands (3 min).
  5. We walk around like inspectors visiting other groups' towers and say what we like (2 min).
  6. Each group blows its tower down on three, and we tidy up the boxes (1 min).

Rules

Variations

Easier

For 3-year-olds, just three very different boxes (big, medium, small).

Standard

For 4-year-olds, five boxes compared in pairs.

Harder

For 5-year-olds, seven boxes with small size differences, plus an upside-down tower (smallest at the bottom) to see what happens.

Teacher tip

Collect boxes from home for a few weeks: shoeboxes, cracker boxes, toothpaste boxes. A common mistake is standing a narrow box on end at the bottom; ask “Will it stay still?” before correcting.
