Bounce It Through the Puddle
In pairs, with a hoop on the ground between them (the puddle), one child bounces the ball into the puddle so it reaches their partner, who catches it with both hands. It works on bounce passes and catching a ball after a bounce.
How to play
- Each pair puts a hoop on the ground between them and stands two steps from it (2 min).
- The teacher models it: ball in both hands, throw it into the puddle so it splashes up toward your partner (3 min).
- Pass the ball back and forth, saying "Splash!" in the puddle; the catcher makes a basket with their hands (4 min).
- Try it with one hand, then pass with no bounce, through the air over the puddle (3 min).
- Each pair makes up their own way to pass and shows it to another pair (2 min).
Rules
- The ball has to land inside the puddle.
- Before passing, check that your partner is ready.
- Say "Splash!" when it bounces.
- If it gets away, whoever is closer goes to get it.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, stand very close to the hoop, and the teacher or an older child does the passing so they only practice catching.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, pass with both hands and catch after the bounce.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, move back from the hoop and try one-handed passes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the partner moves closer and the child catches sitting down; they can roll the ball back.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with a bell and mark the hoop's edge with textured tape; the partner calls "Here it comes!"
- Less dexterity: use a beach ball, which bounces slowly and gives time to get hands ready.
Learning goals
- Pass the ball to a partner with one bounce.
- Catch a ball after a bounce with both hands.
- Coordinate with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- medium bouncy balls: 13
- hoops: 13
Teacher tip
Balls should bounce well but be soft; light rubber playground balls are ideal. Many kids throw the ball right at their own feet: remind them the puddle is in the middle.
