Bottle Cup-and-Ball Challenge
Each student builds a traditional cup-and-ball toy from the top of a plastic bottle, a string, and a paper ball, then works up a ladder of challenges to catch the ball in the funnel. It builds hand-eye coordination, patience, and personal goal setting.
How to play
- Build it (6 min): using a bottle the teacher has already cut, tape over the edge, tie a 20-inch string to the neck, and tie a tightly taped newspaper ball to the other end.
- Free try (2 min): hold the toy by the cap, let the ball hang, and pop it up with a gentle tug to catch it inside.
- Challenge ladder (6 min): level 1, still ball; level 2, swing first; level 3, other hand; level 4, kneeling; level 5, walking a line. Three catches moves you up a level.
- Catch relay (4 min): teams of 5 in lines; each player must make three catches before tagging the next teammate.
- Wrap-up (2 min): each student shares the level they reached and a trick that helped.
Rules
- The toy only moves upward, never swung around overhead.
- Stay two arm lengths from classmates.
- Everyone moves at their own pace; no waiting for others to level up.
- Safety: the bottle edge is always covered with tape.
Variations
Easier
Use a 10-inch string and a wide-mouth container, like a small jug.
Standard
Use a 20-inch string and the five-level ladder.
Harder
Use a 28-inch string or catch after a clap or a jump.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays seated with a short string and may use both hands.
- Autism or shyness: practices in a quiet corner and chooses whether to join the relay.
- Skill level: a student who can't catch it yet may grab the ball with the free hand as a first step.
Learning goals
- Coordinate hand movement with the ball's path.
- Meet personal challenges of increasing difficulty.
- Learn about and make a traditional toy from reused materials.

Teacher tip
Cut the top third off each bottle yourself and sand or tape the edge. If the paper ball is too light, wrap it around a bottle cap for weight.
