Bottle Cap Mosaic Relay
Teams run a relay to bring colored bottle caps back one at a time and recreate the picture on a model card in a chalk grid. It builds speed, memory, group organization, and the habit of reusing everyday waste.
How to play
- Setup: for a week, students have collected caps at home and sorted them by color. Each team of 5 draws a 5 x 5 chalk grid on the blacktop.
- Place a hoop with about 40 mixed caps 15 yards from each grid. Each team gets a card showing a simple picture made of colored squares.
- Round 1 (4 min): one at a time, run to the hoop, take one cap of a color you need, run back, and place it in its square; then the next runner goes.
- Round 2, memory (5 min): the model card sits on a cone halfway down the lane and may only be looked at in passing, never picked up.
- Round 3, design (4 min): each team invents a picture in its grid, and another team must copy it relay-style.
- Wrap-up (2 min): collect caps by color into bags, which is also a race.
Rules
- Carry only one cap per trip.
- Don't leave until your teammate has placed their cap.
- Anyone may fix a misplaced cap, but only on their own turn.
- Safety: return on the outside of the lane to avoid head-on collisions.
Variations
Easier
Use a 3 x 3 grid 10 yards away, with the model always in view.
Standard
Use a 5 x 5 grid 15 yards away, plus the memory round.
Harder
Each trip uses a different way of moving (hopping, sliding, bear crawl) shown by a die.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: acts as the fixed placer at the grid or runs a shorter lane.
- Visual impairment: use large caps in clearly different colors and squares outlined with raised tape.
- Fitness level: may walk briskly; getting the right color and square is what counts.
Learning goals
- Run at top speed in short relays.
- Organize as a team to complete a shared task.
- Value collecting and reusing everyday waste.
Equipment for a class of 25
- plastic bottle caps: 200
- chalk: 5
- hoops: 5
- cardstock: 10
Teacher tip
Ask for about 200 caps per class and store them in bags by color. Model pictures with few rare colors keep teams from waiting for a cap that doesn't exist.
