Blind Polygon
Groups of 6 wearing blindfolds hold a long knotted rope and must shape it into a square, a triangle, or a star just by talking to each other. Students practice communication, spatial awareness, listening, and trusting the group.
How to play
- Make 4 groups of 6 (one of 7), each with a rope about 30 feet long with the ends tied together. Everyone holds it with both hands, standing and spread out.
- First challenge with eyes open: make a square in under a minute so everyone understands the task (2 min).
- Everyone puts on blindfolds. The teacher asks for a triangle. The group has 3 minutes to make it by talking, then takes off blindfolds to check.
- Repeat with a square and then a long rectangle. Before each try, the group takes 1 minute to plan (6 min).
- Final challenge: a five-point star (3 min). Wrap-up: discuss which communication strategies worked (1 min).
Rules
- No one lets go of the rope during a challenge.
- Walk slowly with small steps; the teacher warns any group getting close to another.
- One person talks at a time, and everyone respects their turn.
- Students who don't want a blindfold can close their eyes or be a silent observer.
Variations
Easier
Play with eyes open but no talking.
Standard
Blindfolds on, communicating only by voice.
Harder
Only one person chosen by the group may talk; the others can answer only "yes" or "no."
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair holds the rope at a fixed corner and doesn't need to move.
- Visual impairment: this student plays on equal footing and can share strategies for navigating without sight.
- Autism or anxiety: the student can play without a blindfold or be the observer who explains what they saw at the end.
Learning goals
- Communicate clearly to solve a challenge without sight.
- Find your way in space using the group as a reference.
- Listen to and respect classmates' ideas.
Equipment for a class of 25

- blindfolds: 25
Teacher tip
Spread groups far apart so they don't cross. There's usually early chaos with everyone talking at once; let it happen, then ask how they could organize better.
