Beat Your Best Bodyweight Circuit
A five-station bodyweight strength circuit where each student records reps on a card and, in round two, tries to beat their own score. It builds age-appropriate strength, safe technique, and personal goal-setting.
How to play
- Before class, set up 5 stations: bench-assisted squats, front plank, glute bridge on a mat, incline push-ups on the bench, and slow mountain climbers.
- Teach each exercise with two or three simple cues, like 'flat back' or 'knees behind toes' (4 min).
- Form 5 groups of 5 and give each student a card listing the stations; each group starts at a different station.
- In round one, work for 40 seconds, then take 50 seconds to record reps or seconds held and rotate (8 min).
- Before round two, each student writes a goal on the card, such as two more reps, and repeats the circuit (8 min).
- Finish with 4 minutes for students to compare their results with their own goal, with no class rankings.
Rules
- Compete only against yourself; no comparing scores out loud.
- If form breaks down, stop the rep and reset your position.
- Keep the bench against the wall or have a partner hold it so it doesn't slide.
- Keep breathing throughout the effort; don't hold your breath.
Variations
Easier
Work 30 seconds per station and allow supported versions, like a knee plank.
Standard
Two rounds of 40 seconds of work, with a personal goal for round two.
Harder
Add a third round and tougher versions, such as a plank with alternating arm lifts.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: offer seated upper-body options, such as wall pushes or arm raises with light water bottles.
- Shyness: keep the card private and let the student show results only to the teacher.
- Fitness level: every station has three difficulty levels, and students choose their own each round.
Learning goals
- Perform bodyweight strength exercises with safe technique.
- Track personal performance and set a realistic goal.
- Value personal progress over comparison with others.

Teacher tip
Leave a card and pencil at every station so recording is quick. As you circulate, correct only one technique cue at a time so students aren't overloaded.
