Bear Crawl Tag
A tag game in which everyone, taggers and runners alike, moves in a bear crawl inside a small area. It builds arm and core strength, improves cross-lateral coordination and forces quick changes of direction without standing up.
How to play
- Mark 2 square areas of about 25 x 25 feet with cones and split the class into two groups of 12-13, one per area.
- Practice the bear crawl (3 min): hands and feet on the floor, knees off the ground, right hand moves with left foot; go forward, backward and turn.
- In each area, 2 bears wear pinnies and tag by touching another bear on the shoulder or back.
- Anyone who is tagged takes the pinnie and becomes a tagger; the tagger is free right away, so nobody is ever out.
- Play 90-second rounds with 30 seconds of standing rest in which each group shakes out arms and legs (8 min total).
- Final version (4 min): tagged bears freeze as caves in tabletop position and are freed when another bear crawls underneath them.
Rules
- Tag only with your hand on the shoulders or back, no pushing or jumping on anyone.
- If you put your knees down or stand up to escape, stop and count to three in bear position.
- Nobody may leave the marked area; stepping out counts as being tagged.
- When the whistle blows, everyone stops where they are and sits down.
Variations
Easier
Students may put their knees down (cat crawl) and the area is smaller so there is less distance to cover.
Standard
Bear crawl with knees off the floor, two taggers per area and 90-second rounds.
Harder
Play in a crab walk (tummy up) or with three taggers per area.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated on the floor scooting with the arms or in a wheelchair, and taggers in that area must stay seated too.
- Visual impairment: use a smaller area outlined with a rope on the floor, and taggers say bear as they get close.
- Fitness level: tired students may rest 10 seconds sitting on their heels in a safe base marked with a hoop.
Learning goals
- Move in a bear crawl with cross-lateral arm and leg coordination.
- Change direction and dodge while keeping hands and feet on the floor.
- Follow the agreed tagging rule without pushing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 8
- pinnies: 4
Teacher tip
Short rounds are key because young arms tire quickly. Watch wrists: on a hard floor, play on mats or shorten the rounds even more.
