Balloon Popcorn on a Sheet
The whole group shakes an old bed sheet so the balloons bounce like popcorn without flying out. It builds group coordination, arm strength, and teamwork.
How to play
- We stand around the sheet and hold the edge with both hands (2 min).
- We make small, medium, and big waves moving our arms together (2 min).
- The teacher drops in two balloons: with waves we make them jump like popcorn without falling out (3 min).
- The pan gets hotter: more balloons and more jumping (3 min).
- When the teacher says "lid on!," we lift the sheet high and the balloons stay inside as we lower it (2 min).
- We lay the sheet down and sit around it to catch our breath (1 min).
Rules
- I hold the sheet with both hands.
- We all move our arms at the same time.
- If a balloon flies out, whoever is closest puts it back.
- If a balloon pops, I don't touch the pieces: I tell my teacher.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just waves and two balloons, with plenty of time to watch them bounce.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, more balloons and the final "lid."
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the teacher calls a color and the group tries to bounce only that balloon out.
Adaptations
- Motor-impaired: holds the edge from the wheelchair; the sheet is held at their height.
- Autism: may start outside watching or within the circle, away from popping noise.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher signals "waves" and "lid" with big arm gestures.
Learning goals
- Coordinate movement with the whole group.
- Strengthen arms and shoulders.
- Enjoy a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- sábana vieja: 2
- globos: 10
Teacher tip
With 25 kids, use two sheets with an adult at each. Underinflate the balloons: they bounce better and pop less. If one pops, pick up every piece right away and keep spare balloons already blown up; watch that no one bites them.
