Balloon Badminton over the Rope
Intro to badminton in a small space where a balloon replaces the shuttle and is hit with a mini racket over a rope. The slow flight lets students work on grip, forehand and backhand strokes, and positioning without frustration.
How to play
- String a long rope about 5 ft high across the gym and place pairs on both sides, facing each other, about 6 ft from the next pair (2 min).
- Solo practice for 2 minutes: keep the balloon in the air with the racket, alternating sides of the racket face.
- Cooperative partner rally over the rope for 3 minutes, counting hits in a row; goal: 10.
- 1v1 game for 5 minutes: score when the balloon touches the floor on the other side. Serve underhand from the back.
- Rotate one partner to the right and play a final 2-minute game using backhand only. Clean up (1 min).
Rules
- Hit the balloon only with the racket, never with a hand.
- Each player gets one hit before it crosses the rope.
- Safety: keep your distance from the next pair and don't chase someone else's balloon.
Variations
Easier
The same player may hit twice in a row before sending it over.
Standard
One hit per player and a point when the balloon touches the floor on the other side.
Harder
Use a slower special shuttlecock instead of a balloon, or require alternating forehand and backhand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated; the balloon's slow flight gives plenty of time.
- Visual impairment: brightly colored balloons with a jingle bell inside.
- Skill level: a short-handled racket, or an open-hand hit at first.
Learning goals
- Hold the racket correctly with a handshake grip.
- Hit the balloon with forehand and backhand strokes over the rope.
- Keep a cooperative rally going with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 20
- mini rackets: 25
- long rope: 1
Teacher tip
Keep spare balloons already blown up; some will pop. Warn noise-sensitive students beforehand, and skip this activity if anyone in the class has a latex allergy.
