Balance Beam Bench Challenges
Balance routes along gym benches set right side up or flipped over, with challenge cards that change how students travel. It builds dynamic balance, focus, and posture control on a narrow base of support.
How to play
- Set up 4 gym benches in parallel, 6 feet apart, with mats on both sides. Two benches right side up (wide seat) and two flipped over (narrow beam). Groups of 6 per bench.
- Each bench has a face-down pile of challenge cards: walk on tiptoes, walk backward, pass a partner without stepping off, carry a beanbag on your head, squat in the middle and stand back up.
- The first student in line draws a card, reads it out loud, and does it from one end of the bench to the other. Then they walk back along the side and put the card at the bottom of the pile.
- Every challenge completed without stepping off earns a point for the group; if you step off, climb back on where your foot touched and keep going.
- Every 4 minutes groups rotate one bench to the right, so everyone tries both the wide seat and the narrow beam.
- At the end, each group invents a new challenge, writes it on a blank card, and gives it to another group to try.
Rules
- Only one student on the bench, except for the passing challenge.
- If you lose your balance, hop down onto the mat; never grab a classmate.
- Wait in line behind the start line without pushing or rushing anyone.
- Bare feet or sneakers only, never socks.
Variations
Easier
Do all challenges on the right-side-up bench holding a partner's hand.
Standard
Rotate through all four benches with random cards.
Harder
Combine two cards in one trip, such as walking backward with a beanbag on your head.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the challenges along a tape line on the floor or by pushing the wheelchair through a cone lane.
- Visual impairment: travel the wide bench with one hand on a guide partner's shoulder.
- Fear of heights: always pick the wide bench and simple cards until the student asks to try the beam.
Learning goals
- Maintain dynamic balance on raised, narrow surfaces.
- Adjust movement to different instructions.
- Create a new movement challenge for classmates.

Teacher tip
Check that benches sit flat and the flipped ones don't rock; make picture cards for students who are still slow readers.
