Badminton Clear and Drop Shot Rally
Singles badminton games in which each court is split into a front zone and a back zone, and points are worth more when won by alternating clears and drop shots. Students practice varying depth and making the tactical choice to move the opponent.
How to play
- Set up 6 courts about 10 x 23 ft with the net at 5 ft and a line of cones 6 ft from the net on each side to separate front and back zones. Two players per court and a third as scorekeeper on some (3 min).
- 4-minute drill: A hits the shuttle high to the back (clear) and B returns it softly to the front zone (drop shot); switch roles every 6 hits.
- Game: a regular point is worth 1. If the winning shot lands in the opposite zone from that player's previous shot, it's worth 2.
- 3-minute games; afterward, the winner rotates to the court on the right and the scorekeeper steps in to play (10 min).
- Finish with 3 minutes of free rallying and ask: when did the drop shot pay off?
Rules
- Serve below the waist and diagonally.
- The scorekeeper calls out the value of each point.
- Safety: stay on your side, and nobody backpedals fast without looking.
Variations
Easier
Make the front zone bigger and allow one bounce of the shuttle.
Standard
Two zones, with double points for alternating depth.
Harder
Only winners in the front zone after a previous clear score.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated, and the opponent may only hit to the front zone.
- Visual impairment: a fluorescent shuttle and large cones to mark the zones.
- Skill level: short-handled mini rackets and slower shuttles.
Learning goals
- Tell apart a clear to the back and a drop shot near the net.
- Choose shot depth to move the opponent around.
- Return to a central ready position after each shot.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rackets: 13
- shuttlecocks: 12
- net: 6
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
For the clear, cue a high elbow and contact above the head; for the drop shot, just a gentle push. Line the courts up side by side so shuttles don't cross between courts.
